Silk Painting

February 29.  Leap Day — like finding an unexpected gift in your coat pocket, today is a day to embrace something totally new.  For me, it is opening myself to new possibilities, such as this silk painting.  This morning I prepared the silk fabric, stretched it on a frame and have begun applying the silk dye colors.  The design is a mandala I drew out on paper first.

Salt technique:  I used medium grains of rock salt around the center circle, placed over very wet paint on the silk.  You can see that the salt holds in the dye and then spreads nicely outward in interesting designs.  The second photo shows the salt removed from dried paint.
